KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- Police here crippled two drug trafficking syndicates with the arrest of six people and seizure of various types of drugs worth RM3.8 million in several raids around the Klang Valley last week.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the raids were carried out in six locations, including in Cheras, Ampang Jaya and Jalan Imbi, following the gathering of intelligence and monitoring activities since early this year.
"In the raids, three men and three foreign women aged between 33 and 61 were arrested. All of them are believed to have taken on the role of storekeepers and drug distributors,” he told a media conference here today.
He said that the drugs seized included 462.7 kilogrammes (kg) of MDMA powder, 38.7kg of cannabis flowers, 32.78 grammes of ketamine, 195 grammes of Eramine 5 pills and 52.81 grammes of ecstasy pills, with the overall seizure valued at RM3.8 million and could have fed the addiction of 1.72 million addicts.
According to Fadil, the first syndicate, which has been active since early this year, was crippled on Oct 14 when police raided a car park of a supermarket in Maluri, Cheras, which led to the arrest of a man and the seizure of 18.3 kilogrammes of MDMA powder.
"Further investigation led to the arrest of a male suspect on a road in Pandan Perdana, Ampang Jaya, who then led police to a house in the same area where we detained a woman and seized various types of drugs,” he said.
The following raid was carried out on a condominium in Pandan Jaya, leading to the arrest of two more foreign women and the discovery of various types of drugs hidden there.
As for the second syndicate that was involved in the distribution of cannabis flowers, a man was arrested at the car park of a supermarket in Jalan Imbi at about 10.10 pm on Oct 17.
"Upon inspecting the car driven by the suspect, police found several packages believed to contain cannabis flowers weighing 38.7kg,” he said.
According to him, preliminary investigations found that the syndicate rented posh condominiums to store drugs and carry out transactions at public places, like supermarkets and car parks, around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
Fadil said all the suspects tested negative for drugs, but two of the men had prior crime and drug-related records.
All the suspects have been remanded for seven days to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
