KANGAR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- A Pakistani man was fined RM8,000 by the Magistrate's Court here today for selling decorative and framed items with wrongly inscribed verses of the Quran on them.
Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim meted out the fine, in default 10 months in jail, on Khan Mahammad Hassan, 54, who pleaded guilty to the charge.
Khan Mahammad, who is the owner of the Salim Maju Jaya Enterprise business premises, was charged with selling the items, which included wall clocks and framed verses from the Quran, including the Ayat Kursi and Ayat 1,000 Dinar, as well as the names of Allah.
He was charged with committing the offence at the premises of Salim Maju Jaya Enterprise, No 24, 26 and 28, Taman Pertiwi Indah, Serian here, at 10.15 am on March 29 last year.
The charge was framed under Section 14(1) of the Printing of Quranic Text Act 1986 (Amendment) 2023, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both upon conviction.
Prosecuting officer from the Home Ministry, Muhd Khairuddin Yusoff, appeared for the prosecution, while Khan Mahammad was unrepresented.
