ALOR SETAR, Nov 19 (Bernama) — A bank remisier suffered losses amounting to RM471,100 after being deceived by a non-existent investment syndicate advertised on Facebook last September.
Commercial Crime Investigation Department Head of the Kedah Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK), Supt Loi Yew Lik, said that his department received a report from the complainant at the Kulim District Police Headquarters yesterday at 1.50 pm.
He stated that the incident began on Sept 16 when the victim saw the investment advertisement on the social media platform. The scheme was offered by a company named CMIA Capital Partners and promised lucrative returns.
"The complainant was convinced by screenshots of profits/testimonials and was told that the investment was guaranteed and risk-free. The complainant then contacted an individual named Cheryl, a representative from the investment company, via WhatsApp," he said in a statement here today.
He added that the complainant began making 14 payment transactions totalling RM471,100 into a CIMB account under the name CH Keystone starting October 29.
According to Loi, the complainant initially received a return of RM21,100, but after that, the suspect started giving various excuses and asked the complainant to make additional payments.
He said the complainant suspected he had been cheated after his messages were no longer answered by the suspect.
"Investigations found that the phone number used by the suspect was fake and not used by the company CMIA Capital Partners," he said.
He advised the public to be more vigilant and not to be easily deceived by investments that promise lucrative returns before making any transactions.
"Checks can also be made with the Securities Commission Malaysia or Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to verify the authenticity of an investment entity before making an investment decision.
