FOUR CARS CATCH FIRE NEAR FOOD COURT IN BUKIT MERTAJAM

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- Four cars parked near a food court in Jalan Song Ban Kheng here caught fire this afternoon, with two gutted and two others damaged.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said six firefighters from the Perda Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 2.27 pm.

“The fire involved four vehicles, a Toyota Vellfire multi-purpose vehicle and a BMW X5 sports utility vehicle, both about 95 per cent gutted, while two Toyota Camry sedans sustained 30 and 15 per cent damage respectively,” he said in a statement today.

John said the operations commander conducted an initial assessment before fire control and extinguishing works were carried out with assistance from the Padang Lalang, Cross Street and Berapit volunteer fire brigades.

The fire was brought under control at 3.04 pm, after which the site was handed over to the Fire Investigation Team for further action.

The cause of the fire and the total losses are still under investigation.
