KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 26 (Bernama) -- A total of 313,529 summonses involving various types of vehicles were issued throughout the enforcement of Op PUU (Operation for Law Compliance) in the capital from Oct 1 until yesterday.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the high volume was very disappointing, considering that the police had carried out a month-long advocacy campaign in September before full enforcement began on Oct 1.
“Some 76,000 notices were issued during the advocacy period to ensure the public truly complied with the law, including adherence to the smallest traffic rules,” he said at a press conference held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur Police Chief’s Hi-Tea and Media Appreciation event here today.
Traffic obstruction offence recorded the highest number of summonses at 200,079, followed by ignoring traffic signals with 79,795 summonses, driving without a licence (8,281), expired road tax (4,847), improperly fastened helmets (1,661), failure to stop at traffic lights (1,658), crossing the white line (1,433), parking on zebra crossings (797), and offences involving pedestrians, particularly failing to use pedestrian bridges (1,346).
Of the total summonses issued, cars accounted for the highest number at 246,519, followed by motorcyclists with 56,327 summonses, he added.
Fadil noted that the statistics indicated that compliance among road users remains low, even when it comes to basic rules.
“These figures serve as an indicator of the level of compliance with current and future operations,” he said, pointing out that selfish attitudes and lack of tolerance among road users remain widespread and were among the main causes of traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur.
As such, Fadil said Op PUU would continue to be implemented in Kuala Lumpur to ensure motoriststruly abide by traffic laws.
