BERA, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- Police arrested a man and seized 112 units of fireworks worth an estimated RM400,000 in a raid on a building along Jalan Highway, Triang here last Friday.
Bera district police Supt Zulkiflee Nazir said the raid was conducted at about 6 pm based on intelligence gathered on illegal sales of fireworks.
"Police found a man, 54, believed to be the owner and caretaker of the fireworks stored in the building. 112 units of fireworks believed to be imported from China and stored without a valid licence were seized,” he said in a media conference at the Bera district police headquarters here today.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fireworks seized were of high value and rarely seen in local markets, indicating that the potential buyers were those with high income, he said, adding that the suspect has been remanded for three days from Saturday till today and that the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
Meanwhile, he revealed that the police have approved about 30 licences for fireworks sales for the festive season, and stressed that the seizure did not involve any legal licence holders.
“Each licence application will be assessed in terms of location suitability, safety and distance from residences. Premises that do not meet these requirements will not be approved,” he added.
