TUMPAT, Feb 15 (Bernama) -- Kelantan police will focus on 109 locations identified as accident- and congestion-prone areas in conjunction with Op Selamat for Chinese New Year, beginning today.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said of the total, 42 locations were classified as ‘hotspots’, which frequently experienced traffic congestion, while another 67 were identified as ‘blackspots’, areas where accidents often occured.

“Enforcement will focus on six main offences, namely speeding, driving in the emergency lane, overtaking on double lines, queue cutting, failing to obey traffic lights and using communication devices while driving.

“We will also deploy drones to monitor traffic congestion and motorists committing traffic offences,” he told reporters after the Advocacy Programme and Road Safety Awareness Campaign at Pasir Pekan here today.

Elaborating further, Mohd Yusoff said during the period, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) would deploy 30 officers and 200 personnel to the identified locations.

“Among the measures taken are establishing the Jam Squad and ‘Op Lancar’ from Feb 11 to 22, in addition to setting up the Op Selamat Subtek Operations Room to collect reporting data throughout the operation period.

“Personnel will be deployed round the clock to ensure monitoring and immediate action at the locations involved,” he said.

He said based on statistics recorded during the previous two Op Selamat Chinese New Year operations, the number of crash cases showed a marked decline, with 252 crashes including eight fatal cases recorded in 2024, compared with 228 crashes involving three fatal cases last year.

“I would like to advise the public to refer to social media pages on traffic flow to obtain information on alternative routes before starting their journey,” he said.
