KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 (Bernama) -- Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has detained a foreign man believed to be involved in an attempt to steal cable near the railway track at KM 37.478 along the Telok Gadong-Teluk Pulai sector yesterday evening.

KTMB said in a statement today that the suspect was spotted acting suspiciously by KTMB Auxiliary Police personnel who were conducting patrols in the cable theft ‘hotspot’ area at about 6.45 pm.

“When approached, the suspect attempted to flee but was successfully detained by the KTMB Auxiliary Police, and further inspection uncovered a small bag, a knife and a pair of scissors believed to have been used to carry out the criminal activity,” the statement said.

According to KTMB, the suspect and the seized items were subsequently handed over to the Klang Selatan District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 7.20 pm for further investigation, and it is understood that the man, who had no identification documents, is a foreign national.

The suspect was detained under the Railways Act 1991 (Act 463) and the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (Act 715) for trespassing and damaging railway property, offences which carry a fine, imprisonment or both.

Members of the public with information on any suspicious activity along railway tracks are urged to contact the KTMB Auxiliary Police Information Collection and Dissemination Centre at 03-2263 1194 (24 hours) or the nearest police station.
