KUANTAN, March 26 (Bernama) -- A retiree was defrauded of more than RM328,000 last month after falling victim to a phone scam.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 64-year-old received a WhatsApp call from someone posing as a police officer from Putrajaya.

The caller claimed that the man was involved in fraud and would be arrested, and told him to open two bank accounts for monitoring.

“The victim transferred his savings into the accounts on Feb 5 as instructed and shared his banking details with the suspect,” he said in a statement today.

Yahaya said the victim realised he had been scammed after checking his accounts yesterday and finding them empty, and being unable to contact the suspect.

The victim lodged a report at the Rompin district police headquarters, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
