2024 AGRICULTURE CENSUS HITS 86.2 PCT COMPLETION NATIONWIDE

21/09/2024 08:29 PM

SUNGAI BESAR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has recorded 86.2 per cent completion of the 2024 Agriculture Census nationwide as of yesterday.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said this figure represents 1.02 million out of 1.18 million residences and 16,920 out of 19,753 agricultural companies visited.

In Selangor, he said the agricultural census has reached 83.4 per cent, with 67,727 residences and 2,071 establishments identified as potential agricultural sites.

“We encourage all operators and organisations involved in agricultural activities to provide accurate and comprehensive information to our census officers.

“Reliable and thorough census data is essential for delivering real-time agricultural statistics that benefit all stakeholders,” he told reporters during his official visit to the shrimp farm of Global Goodway (M) Sdn Bhd (Sg Nipah Farm) here today.

Mohd Uzir said the highest achievements in the Selangor agricultural census come from the districts of Hulu Selangor and Hulu Langat.

Meanwhile, he said a full report on the census is expected to be shared with the public as early as the first quarter of next year, while preliminary analyses are anticipated by the end of this year.

“However, the outcomes depend significantly on feedback from agencies, departments and all involved parties.

“The remaining 18 days are critical for completing the data collection process across upstream sectors, including crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture, forestry and logging,” he said.

The 2024 Agriculture Census aims to establish a solid foundation of data regarding agricultural holdings, such as demographic details, agricultural yields, input costs, farm sizes, land use and ownership, mechanisation, and technology adoption.

The data will play a vital role in shaping both short- and long-term policies and programmes aimed at enhancing food security, productivity, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Mohd Uzir also said that preliminary findings from the census have uncovered numerous opportunities to elevate agricultural productivity, including strategies to reduce reliance on imported food sources.

“When technology is effectively utilised and average costs are low (reduced), market prices can be lowered, ultimately benefiting consumers.

“Besides this, we have identified challenges in agricultural productivity, such as underutilised family inheritance lands due to owners or heirs pursuing alternative income sources,” he said.
