JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- The voter turnout percentage for last Saturday's Mahkota state by-election was considered satisfactory, although it recorded only 53.84 per cent.
Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong said that the campaign work by the Pakatan Harapan (PH), led by Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi, successfully encouraged the Chinese community to vote for the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in the by-election.
"Throughout the campaign, we managed to convince many voters that a vote for BN candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah was a vote for Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and the Unity Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"In fact, the Chinese voters, most of whom are supporters of PH, gave strong support to BN in the Mahkota by-election," said the Iskandar Puteri MP in a statement today.
According to Liew, who is also Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, one reason for the lower voter turnout was that young voters did not return to vote because they were working outside the district, particularly in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
"Additionally, I have personally met several young voters who were unaware of their right to vote. Many of them still do not realise about the automatic voter registration when they reach 18 years of age," he added.
BN retained the Mahkota seat with a 20,648-vote majority win over Perikatan Nasional’s Mohamad Haizan Jaafar, who received 7,347 votes.
