KTMB EARNS SPECIAL ACCOLADE FOR EXCELLENCE IN RAILWAY TOURISM AT PERAK TOURISM AWARD 2024

03/10/2024 09:28 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) was honoured with the Special Award for the Excellence Railway Tourism Experience category at the Perak Tourism Award 2024 yesterday.

The award was presented to KTMB Operations Control Head Afzar Zakariya by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and State Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee at a gala dinner held at a hotel in Ipoh, Perak.

In a statement today, KTMB said the recognition reflected its remarkable achievements and substantial contributions to the tourism sector in the state’s transport industry.

“This award ceremony, organised by Tourism Perak, was held to recognise the dedication of tourism industry players who work tirelessly to promote Perak tourism and contribute to making Visit Perak Year more vibrant through effective initiatives.

“A total of 46 awards in 10 categories were presented as recognition and appreciation to industry players who are dedicated to advancing Perak’s tourism sector and enhancing the Visit Perak Year 2024 campaign,” the statement said.

KTMB, in the same statement, said that the award demonstrated its ongoing commitment to supporting the state government's efforts to promote Perak as a tourist destination accessible by train.

“The ETS (Electric Train Service) service continues to be the preferred option for passengers, as evidenced by a 19 per cent increase in ridership from 2022 to 2023 at all stations in Perak.

“There are 13 KTMB stations across Perak, and on average, ETS services have transported a total of 815,277 passengers at these stations as of August this year,” it said.

According to the statement, KTMB introduced its latest product on Sept 7, known as the Railway To See Malaysia (RTSM) Excursion Train' (Promising Perak edition), to promote Visit Perak Year 2024, aiming to draw more domestic, Asian, and international tourists to use KTMB train services.

“This train operates from KL Sentral to Taiping at the start of each week (Saturday and Sunday) each month, featuring a conventional diesel locomotive, which is now no longer in use on the northern route.

“ETS services will expand its train network to Segamat in Johor this year. This marks the first time ETS has extended its reach into Johor and is expected to significantly boost the local economy, especially the tourism sector in the district,” it said.

KTMB anticipates that this expansion will boost demand for ETS, which is gaining significant interest among the southern community for travel to the northern sector.
