2024 HIPMAX STORYFEST SHOWCASES WEALTH OF MALAYSIAN FOLKLORE THROUGH YOUNG VOICES IN ENGLISH

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- More than 11,000 students participated in the 2024 HIPMaX StoryFest competition, where they brought their favourite folktales to life through exciting storytelling and theatre performances.

Running into its sixth year of organisation, the participation in this year’s annual competition which was organised jointly with Maxis eKelas and the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) of the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) was the highest since the programme’s inception.

Maxis in a statement announced this year's HIPMaX theme, 'Celebrating Malaysian Folklore', highlighting the creativity of students from three categories, namely primary, lower and upper secondary, who recounted and reenacted their favourite folk tales.

“To encourage participation in this competition, a tour was conducted involving more than 50 schools across seven states, in collaboration with ELTC and various state education offices. Over 16,000 students attended creative storytelling and theatre workshops.

“This competition encourages students to practice their communication skills and internalise positive values ​​through a fun and creative approach,” said the statement.

The competition which has just ended saw a total of 18 finalists in the storytelling and theatre categories from all over the country gathered to compete in the final event and the prize presentation was officiated by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek at the campus of the International Language Teacher Education Institute in Lembah Pantai here.

A total of 15 winners emerged from the storytelling category, while 75 students were recognised as winners as part of their own teams (of four to five members) in the theatre category, with the top winner in each category receiving a tablet and the runner-up receiving an RM100 book voucher to encourage them to continue their learning journey.

Maxis Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Goh Seow Eng said the competition was a platform for students to develop their English Language skills and the overwhelming response received this year proved Maxis’ commitment to providing learning initiatives that had a beneficial impact on students nationwide.

Meanwhile, ELTC director Farah Mardhy Aman said she was very excited to see such an encouraging participation in the competition, which promoted learning English in an interesting way.

“English is an essential skill in today's global landscape and initiatives like this are invaluable in helping students gain the confidence and mastery they need.

“Our collaboration with Maxis is closely aligned with our aspirations to increase the use of English in education and we look forward to supporting more programmes like this in the future," she said.

Maxis eKelas has been a strategic partner of the Ministry of Education and Culture since 2016, which plays an important role in helping improve English language proficiency among students from Year 4 to Form 5 through after-school digital learning programmes in the form of live tutorials, competitions and digital content.
