SUNGAI BULOH, Oct  5 (Bernama) -- An allocation of RM481 million has been approved for the Sungai Damansara Flood Mitigation Project to reduce the risk of flooding in the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency.

Sungai Buloh Member of Parliament Datuk Seri R Ramanan said the tender for the project has been closed and an offer letter will be issued to the successful contractor.

"No prime minister has ever approved a project of this magnitude for Sungai Buloh. I am very grateful to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," he told reporters after the presentation of education incentives for the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency here today.

Ramanan, who is Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, said another project, Phase Two of the Sungai Buloh Flood Mitigation Project costing about RM780 million, was also planned to reduce flood in the constituency.

The project is still at the proposal stage, he added.

Commenting on flash floods in the Sungai Buloh constituency,  Ramanan said the situation is under control.

“I thank members of the First Response Team (FRT) for giving priority to helping the victims, especially People With Disabilities (PwDs), the elderly, single mothers and families with many children, even though their own homes were affected by the floods," he said.

Ramanan said he would distribute aid to flood victims in several affected areas today in collaboration with the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM).

It was reported that several areas in Sungai Buloh, including Paya Jaras, Kampung Melayu Subang and Merbau Sempak, were hit by flash floods following heavy rain last Thursday.

Commenting on today's event, Ramanan said the Bank Rakyat Foundation (YBR), in collaboration with KUSKOP,  provided educational aid for school students and students in institutions of higher learning (IPT).

A total of seven national secondary schools (SMK) received sponsorship for Tuisyen Rakyat amounting to RM70,000 while eight national primary schools (SK) received school aid amounting to RM40,000, in addition to schooling aid to 500 school students amounting to RM50,000.
