KOTA KINABALU, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Transport service providers in Sabah are encouraged to use technology, especially e-hailing applications, to improve the public transportation system in the state and meet public demand.
Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) chairman Vivian Wong Shir Yee said utilisation of e-hailing applications would make it easier for the public to use public transport, thus increasing its usage among people in the state.
She highlighted that data from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) indicated that only around 20 per cent of residents currently use public transport, and she believes that adopting relevant technologies could help boost this percentage.
“We also hope for government support, such as budget allocation for upgrading the transportation system, apart from integrating the use of technology to encourage the public to use public transport.
“With today’s advancements in technology, we need to start transitioning to a more efficient transportation system to prevent Sabah from falling behind in this sector,” she told reporters after launching the Kumpool Sabah application at UMS, here today.
Also present was Asia Direct Travel and Tours Sdn Bhd managing director, Imelda Ambrose Angkangon.
Kumpool is an e-hailing application for van service that helps people around Kota Kinabalu access public transportation starting at RM3. The application is equipped with a variety of safety features and a user-friendly interface.
Wong, who is also Sandakan MP, emphasised the commitment of the MADANI Government in driving economic growth, social well-being and infrastructure development, especially in the state.
“Transportation is the backbone of Kota Kinabalu as it connects people to jobs and services. Therefore, an efficient transportation solution is very much needed,” she said.
She said she believed that a more efficient and upgraded transportation system would help reduce traffic congestion, decrease pollution and provide affordable transportation options for the public.
