PARENTS SHOULD STAY INFORMED ON EMERGING INDUSTRIES, CAREER OPPORTUNITIES - DR ANNUAR

27/10/2024 09:45 PM

SIBU, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- In a rapidly evolving world, it is crucial for parents to stay informed about emerging industries and the career opportunities that will shape the future workforce, says Sarawak Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development I Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

He said sectors like semiconductors, technology, engineering, and other STEM fields were expanding rapidly, offering significant opportunities for long-term career success.

Annuar emphasised the importance of parental influence on children’s career choices, especially in areas that aligned with future demands, especially the semiconductor field.

“Research conducted by the Khazanah Research Institute in 2018 has shown that a significant 72 per cent of a child's decision about their future is influenced by their parents.

"This statistic speaks volumes about the responsibility we carry when guiding our children in choosing their career paths,” said Dr Annuar.

He urged parents to encourage their children to explore career paths that align with their passions while also meeting the demands of tomorrow’s industries.

“Choosing a career in the semiconductor industry particularly in integrated circuit (IC) design, offers your children not only job security but also the chance to be part of a global industry that is shaping the future,” he added.

Dr Annuar said this during the closing of IC Design Make-A-Thon 2024 at University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here, today.

The three-day event which began on Friday featured the participation of 40 students, forming 10 teams, with participants from UTS and 10 local secondary schools.

Team Electrocak represented by Tiong Wei Jie and Ki Hui Yee from UTS along with Tiffany Jun Mckenzie and Nur Aleesya Dayana Mohamad Salim from SMK Kampung Nangka emerged as the champions.

The team will receive their cash prize at the Grand Finale in Kuching on Nov 3.

The LP Team consisting Risu Manuel Frankie Deria and Maiwarda Safidi from UTS as well as Ho Nyet Wei and Fong Yu Chen from SMK Deshon claimed the first runner-up position while the second runner-up title was awarded to The Dragon Warriors, comprising Vincent Tiong Yong Han from UTS alongside Reiko Wong Ke Shin and Gabriella Vanessa Usu Sylvester Jigom from SMK Rosli Dhoby.

The People’s Choice Award went to Team Alligator of Innovation, consisting of Tiong Jiing Bin and Chiu Siew Chin from UTS and Elyiana Ummie Deris and Willexsly Willismo from SMK Durin.

The event organised by SMD Semiconductor with support from the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC), Chumbaka and the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) was aimed at promoting the semiconductor industry while advancing STEM education in schools and universities.
