DEVELOPERS URGED TO INSTALL SOLAR PANELS IN NEW HOUSING PROJECTS - FADILLAH

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Housing developers are encouraged to install solar panels on rooftops in new housing projects in line with Malaysia’s commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as early as 2050 through the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said so far, Sime Darby Property Bhd has taken the initiative to implement a pilot rooftop solar project in its latest property development.

“This is one of the programmes to install rooftop solar panels which will supply energy back to the grid. The returns will be shared, including with homeowners,” he said during the oral question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (PN-Kubang Kerian) regarding initiatives to encourage rooftop solar panel installations in housing projects.

Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said the project’s success would serve as a basis for nationwide implementation.

Meanwhile, Fadillah said the government is continuing the e-Rebate programme with an allocation of RM70 million under Budget 2025 to raise awareness about energy efficiency and to support low-income groups.

He said those purchasing approved appliances rated five and four stars will be eligible for the rebate.

“They can claim it from SEDA (Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia). It is hoped that this programme will not only increase awareness of energy efficiency but also help those in need,” he said.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) on efforts to promote the use of energy-efficient electrical appliances among the public, especially the B40 group.

Under Budget 2025, an e-Rebate of up to RM70 million is allocated to encourage consumers and industries to purchase energy-efficient electrical equipment.
