TERENGGANU MOOTS SETTING UP ELEPHANT SANCTUARY TO RESOLVE WILD ELEPHANT ISSUES

06/11/2024 06:28 PM

"Elephant attacks occur as their original habitat is reducing, and affecting their food sources.

"Therefore, three state representatives are suggesting we build a sanctuary to house the elephants caught in a safe place that has adequate food sources for them,” he told reporters at the 2024 Terengganu Biodiversity Seminar: Safeguarding Biodiversity For Sustainable Future at Wisma Darul Iman here today.

He said the sanctuary would ensure that residents were safe from continued attacks by elephants as preventive measures like installing electric fences have been unable to resolve the wild elephant issues completely.

"Elephants caught and released to their original habitat usually return to attack local populace. The cost of relocating elephants can be between RM50,000 and RM70,000 an animal.

"In Terengganu, we estimate there are around 300 elephants left. We want to protect them so they so they do not dwindle in the interest of future generations,” he added.
