ASTRO TAKES STRONG STAND AGAINST DIGITAL PIRACY

15/11/2024 10:47 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 15 (Bernama) -- Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad (Astro), a leading content and entertainment company, has ramped up its fight against digital piracy with significant strides in the first half of financial year (FY) 2025.

In a statement today, Astro Group CEO Euan Daryl Smith said Astro’s battle against illegal streaming and distribution has been multifaceted, combining legal action, collaborations with enforcement agencies and consumer education.

He said during that period, the company has secured a total action value of RM808,927.20 through fines, settlements and the prosecution of illegal streaming device (ISD) sellers.

“When people steal content, they don’t just take what isn’t theirs… they pilfer from the actors, directors, cameramen and small businesses behind every production.

“In partnership with the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Royal Malaysian Police and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, the company is dismantling piracy networks, shutting down illegal broadcasts and pursuing those who profit from piracy,” he said.

Smith said Astro’s anti-piracy mission, however, extends beyond enforcement, which the company believes that educating consumers is just as important as legal action.

He said every time viewers opt for legal platforms, they contribute to the future of the media industry, ensuring that creators are compensated fairly and that audiences can enjoy content with peace of mind.

“Every legitimate subscription counts. It strengthens the creative ecosystem, nurtures talent and keeps the stories flowing,” he said.

He said to showcase these efforts and results, Astro has compiled a mid-year report card detailing a comprehensive breakdown of its anti-piracy victories and offers an inside look at the numbers, the partnerships driving success and the hidden risks consumers face from illegal streaming.
