INCINERATOR PLANT IN LANGKAWI TO RESUME OPERATION IN JUNE NEXT YEAR - EXCO

ALOR SETAR, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- The incinerator plant in Langkawi is expected to resume operation in June next year once repair work on its main components is completed, the Kedah State Legislative Assembly sitting was told today.

State Housing, Local Government and Health Committee chairman Major (Rtd) Mansor Zakaria said there had been several major damages to the plant’s main components, and the repair work was expected to take six months.

“The incinerator plant has been operating under the supervision of Drizzle Engineering Sdn Bhd after passing testing and commissioning in October 2022.

“On May 3, 2024, the operation and maintenance contract for the plant was awarded to Bumi Segar Indah Sdn Bhd for a six-year period,” he said in reply to a question from Datuk Dr Mohd Hayati Othman (PAS-Tokai).

According to Mansor, the operator was currently carrying out custodial work involving housekeeping, landscaping, security control, and environmental management.

He also said that the company had been tasked with the operation and maintenance of the incinerator plant, as well as upgrading it by adding components within two years.

“The operator is instructed to carry out waste incineration operations for at least 3,000 hours a year, or 11 days a month.

“This is to provide the operator with the necessary time to carry out maintenance and repair work, ensuring the plant operates at an optimum level, with the capacity to incinerate up to 100 tonnes per day,” he said.

Meanwhile, commenting on the Kulim Municipal Council’s (MPKK) collaboration with a private company for the construction of a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant, Mansor said that no final decision had been made yet.

“This WTE plant requires a very large site of approximately 50 acres and at least 1,000 tonnes of garbage per day to operate.

“We have also received suggestions from several companies for the WTE disposal centre to be located in the middle of the state to facilitate waste delivery from all districts...but as of today, no final decision has been made regarding the WTE project,” he said.
