RANTAU PANJANG TRADERS HOLD CHEAP SALE AFTER FLOODS TO MINIMISE LOSSES

PASIR MAS, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- The recent floods in Rantau Panjang have not dampened the spirit of the traders here. Instead, the floods have prompted them to hold a clearance sale with special discounts, to minimise losses after their shops were inundated.

A Bernama check around the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex in Rantau Panjang found that people were seizing the opportunity to buy various items such as clothing, carpets, pillows, bed linens, plates and pots at discounted prices, much lower than usual.

According to Noreha Mohamad, 35, the owner of a wholesale and retail shop, the decision to hold the sale was made to avoid further losses after her shop’s goods were submerged in water for three days and nights.

"We had no choice but to sell the items. If we kept the goods, they would get even more damaged.

“So it's better to sell them as they can still be used after being cleaned by the buyers," she told Bernama adding that most of the goods were sold at half their original price. 

She hopes that the public will come to shop at Pasar Rantau Panjang as many traders have been badly affected by the severe floods.

"This flood is beyond expectations. Normally floods happen, but not like this. I am still calculating my losses, but it’s definitely a lot," she added.

Meanwhile, Wan Hanafi Wan Jaafar, 63, who runs a clothing and religious equipment business, accepted the flood damage of over RM10,000 as a test for him.

"Although I’ve incurred a significant loss, my family and I are grateful because we are safe and didn’t suffer any injuries," he said.

"This year’s flood rose so quickly, leaving most traders here with no time to save their goods," Wan Hanafi added.
