BUTTERWORTH, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- Penang DAP has sent four containers carrying 100 tonnes of various essential goods to be distributed to flood victims in three affected states namely Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.
Its chairman Steven Sim Chee Keong said all the items were contributions from the people in the state including volunteers, non-governmental organisations (NGO) as well as private companies to those hit by the disaster.
He said apart from food and daily essential items, the party also received furniture and utensils such as 101 cooking pots, 500 pillows, 500 mattresses, 2,204 linen sheets, 1,200 towels, 9,000 eggs as well as 200,000 bottles of drinking water.
“In view of the flood disaster which has occurred in several states, especially in the East Coast and Kedah, the state DAP committee has decided to show solidarity by launching the Flood Aid Mission by holding a campaign to collect donations and contributions to be distributed to those affected.
“In five days, we have managed to collect various items needed by the flood victims in addition to collecting cash donations totaling RM98,107,” he said when speaking at the Penang DAP Flood Aid Mission Flag-Off Ceremony in Mak Mandin here, today.
Sim said the cash would be used in phases given the possibility of a second wave of flooding and in the first phase, RM60,000 would be distributed to the three states involved with each state receiving RM20,000 as flood aid.
He said the remaining donation money would be used entirely for post-flood cleanup work.
According to Sim, three Penang DAP representatives were also sent to Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu as coordinators who will hand over all assistance to the DAP committees in the states involved to be distributed to the victims.
He hoped that the assistance channeled could ease the burden of the victims and said Penang DAP would continue to be at the forefront in helping the people who need attention.
