LABUAN, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- The University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) has marked a major milestone in technological innovation with the resounding success of its inaugural Technology Talent Hub 2024 (T2H 2024), which culminated in a grand award ceremony today.
The event, celebrated for its innovation-driven theme, "Ideas, Innovate, Inspire", showcased the exceptional creativity and technological acumen of UMS students, setting a new benchmark for talent cultivation in Labuan and Sabah.
Organised by the Labuan Faculty of International Finance (LFIF), in collaboration with the Faculty of Computing and Informatics and Neurogine Sdn Bhd, T2H 2024 has been hailed as a transformative initiative to address regional brain drain while fostering growth in artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technologies.
Organising chairman cum LFIF dean Assoc Prof Dr Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal said the event was a platform to inspire the next generation of technology pioneers.
"Innovation, a fleeting spark, can ignite anywhere, but only those with a curious mind will see its flame," he told Bernama after the prize presentation at the UMSKAL building here today.
The competition awarded a total of RM23,000 in prizes, with the winning team taking home RM10,000.
Sponsored by Neurogine, the event attracted participation from various disciplines, challenging students to tackle real-world problems through innovative solutions.
Dr Geoffrey noted the initiative not only nurtures talent but also positions Labuan as a hub for cutting-edge technological development.
The judging panel, co-chaired by Dr Geoffrey and UMSKAL Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Hanafi Ahmad Hijazi, included distinguished industry leaders such as Neurogine chief executive officer Owen Chen Chee Onn, Labuan Shipyard and Engineering chief executive officer Shahrul Effendy Ahmad Tajudin, and MDEC senior manager Jesse Chooi Tze Keong.
Projects were evaluated for their use of AI, blockchain, and practical solutions addressing local challenges.
Owen Chen said the event is a catalyst for change, reaffirming the company's commitment to innovation.
"We are incredibly proud of the talent and creativity displayed by the participants and we are confident that the T2H 2024 will catalyse transformative change for Labuan and Malaysia.
“T2H 2024 has set a dynamic precedent for future initiatives, reinforcing UMS and Labuan’s emerging role in driving technological progress and innovation across Malaysia,” he said.
