KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- The government will use the findings from the Impact Study of Artificial Intelligence, Digital and Green Economy on the Malaysian Workforce to formulate more effective strategies in the areas of training, career pathways and investments.
Human Resource Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said this is because the government recognises the significant challenges graduates face in securing employment, particularly due to the impact of artificial intelligence (AI).
"The study will serve as a guideline not only for policymakers but also for private companies, workers and the public in understanding the implications of 21st-century economic trends on the job market.
"Will current roles and jobs be affected in the next three to five years? This report will provide crucial input, enabling us to develop better strategies for training, career pathways and investments," he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Negara today.
He was responding to a question from Senator Datuk Salehuddin Saidin regarding measures to address the issue of the workforce's employment rate not matching their skills and qualifications.
To a supplementary question on whether the government would require employers to pay wages to internship students, Sim said the Human Resource Ministry has introduced three incentives to encourage employers to offer structured, paid internship opportunities to young people.
"The first incentive is a double tax deduction, which will serve as a significant motivation, especially for larger companies.
"The second incentive involves a matching grant of approximately RM30 million for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that may not benefit from the double tax deduction. For example, if a company pays RM600 per month to an internship student, the government will provide an additional RM300 as a subsidy or incentive," he explained.
For the third incentive, he said the government would allow companies to utilise the HRD Corp levy to pay allowances to internship students.
"This is essential as we view internships as an effective form of on-the-job training," he said.
