MAN BUILDS TREEHOUSE AS TEMPORARY FLOOD REFUGE

PASIR MAS, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- A man has taken the initiative to build a treehouse in front of his home in Kampung Kubang Tebakang, here, in preparation for the ongoing monsoon season.

Mohd Nor Afiq Mohd Anuar, 33, said the five-square-foot hut, built a month ago, serves as a temporary refuge for his family if floodwater rises to the attic of their house.

"During the first wave of flood last week, the water rose very quickly to an unusually high level, exceeding three metres, and nearly reaching the attic.

"While waiting for the Fire and Rescue Department to evacuate us, I, along with my siblings, took refuge in this treehouse, while my father and mother waited in the attic," he told Bernama today.

According to Mohd Nor Afiq, the treehouse, built on a tree that is over 20 years old, also has a far better phone signal reception compared to their house, making it easier for them to contact others for help.

Mohd Nor Afiq said the treehouse construction was the result of discussions with his younger brother Mohd Aniq Shahmi, 14, along with ideas shared by his father, Anuar Hamzah, 66, who is a carpenter.

"This idea came about because every year, our village is flooded. Sometimes it took weeks for the water to subside.

"The hut, equipped with electrical socket and a fan for added comfort, also serves as a flood 'watchtower' for the village," he said.

Mohd Nor Afiq added that the treehouse has now become an attraction for the villagers, who often visit his mother’s food stall located in the same area.

To ensure that the hut remains sturdy, he consistently monitors the structure to keep it in good condition.
