SPAN LAUNCHES SHORT VIDEO COMPETITION TO PROMOTE WATER CONSERVATION AMONG YOUTH

19/12/2024 08:27 PM

CYBERJAYA, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has launched a short video competition to raise public awareness about the importance of water conservation, particularly among the younger generation. The competition runs until Jan 9.

SPAN chairman Charles Santiago said the initiative aims to engage young participants, including school students, university students, and youth aged between 18 and 30, in efforts to protect water, one of the country's most vital resources.

"We must address the issue of water usage exceeding the limit of around 274 litres per day, which surpasses the World Health Organisation's (WHO) recommendation of 165 litres per day," he said during a press conference after the competition launch today.

He added that participants are required to create a one-minute-and-30-second video on topics such as climate change, water resources, river pollution, and water usage.

Charles also announced attractive prizes for the winners in each participant category: RM1,500 for school students, RM3,000 for university students, and RM5,000 for youth.

For more information, participants can visit SPAN's official website at https://www.span.gov.my or follow SPAN on its official social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Platform X.

Regarding the upcoming awards ceremony, Charles shared plans to invite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the guest of honour.

"If the Prime Minister is available next month, he will attend to present the awards. We also plan to host a dialogue session with him and the younger generation on water conservation," he added.

Earlier, during his speech at the launch, Charles said the competition is part of the Smart Water Campaign, which aims to educate and raise public awareness about the importance of responsible water usage.

"A creative short video not only attracts attention but also sparks conversation, evokes emotions, and leads to behavioural change. With just one click, messages about water conservation can be spread to millions, regardless of age or background," he said.
