IPOH, Dec 26 (Bernama) -- Single mothers in rural areas have the potential to increase their family income and improve their standard of living by producing healthy and nutritious Malaysian-made yoghurt and kimchi for the local market.
Bioeconomy Corporation Sdn Bhd Industry Support Division senior vice president, Nora Mohamed said that the production of these food products has been well received by Malaysians.
She added that, as a starting point, the organisation, through the Kembara Komuniti Programme in collaboration with the Malaysian National Single Mothers Organisation (PITKM), has brought together 35 single mothers who were taught how to produce these foods originating from Korea.
"The empowerment of single mothers is carried out through science-based learning focused on fermentation technology, enhancing knowledge and skills in food production, particularly in yogurt and kimchi making.
"Participants are also exposed to entrepreneurship to enable them to create sustainable income opportunities," she said in a statement issued by Bioeconomy Corporation today.
Earlier, Bioeconomy Corporation announced that the programme, held today at Kampung Padang Community Hall in Behrang, provided participants with the opportunity to learn the best methods for producing yogurt and kimchi using fresh ingredients such as vegetables and local spice enzymes to maintain the authenticity of Malaysian-made kimchi.
The programme was also joined by BioNexus-status company, Bio Tree Biotechnology Sdn Bhd, which provided training, as well as Alpro Pharmacy, which conducted free health checks.
Nora said that such programmes are also seen as helping single mothers expand their knowledge on food handling, hygiene practices, and food safety according to the prescribed procedures.
