LABUAN, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- The ageing staff quarters of the Labuan Royal Malaysian Customs Department at Bukit Kuda have received a significant upgrade following the successful completion of RM3.19 million worth of repair and refurbishment works last month.
Labuan Public Works Department (JKR) director Ir Mohd Faizul Mohd Ali Hanapiah said the project, which began in July, was completed by the end of November.
Key improvements included structural repairs, internal and external enhancements, upgrades to the piping and sanitary systems, as well as improved street lighting and road access.
“The project focused on enhancing physical facilities and creating a safer, more comfortable living environment for Customs Department staff,” Mohd Faizul said to Bernama after the project handover to Labuan Customs director Aspalila Ag Tuah at the Perumahan Kastam Bukit Kuda quarters today.
Mohd Faizul highlighted the collaborative effort involving seven contractors, which ensured the project was completed on schedule despite challenges such as maintaining operations in an active residential area.
“The improvements are expected to significantly enhance the well-being of customs staff and their families, reflecting the government’s commitment to elevating the quality of life for public service workers,” said Mohd Faizul.
Residents of Bukit Kuda expressed their appreciation for the upgrades, highlighting the transformation of the quarters into a more comfortable and welcoming environment.
Rahim Ali, a staff member, shared his gratitude, saying, “This transformation was long overdue. It finally feels like a real home.”
Aspalila also echoed these sentiments, thanking all parties involved in the project. She underscored the importance of providing safe and comfortable living spaces for Customs personnel, who play a vital role in securing the nation’s borders and ensuring revenue collection.
“The refurbishment of the Customs quarters at Bukit Kuda is part of broader government efforts to enhance public infrastructure in Labuan.
“It marks a significant step in ensuring public service housing facilities meet modern standards, benefiting not only the residents but also reinforcing their morale and efficiency in service delivery,” she said.
Aspalila also emphasised the significance of addressing housing needs amid rising rental costs in Labuan.
“This allows Customs personnel to enjoy better living conditions, reduce financial burdens, and enhance their quality of life,” she said.
