KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Heriot-Watt University Malaysia announced its sponsorship of Scotland’s U-19 Women’s national cricket team ahead of the prestigious International Cricket Council (ICC) U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia said to mark this exciting partnership, the 15-member squad visited the university’s Malaysia campus, engaging with students and the wider community in an inspiring on-campus event aimed at encouraging greater interest in women’s sports in Malaysia and beyond.
“The sponsorship reflects Heriot-Watt University’s enduring commitment to empowering women and youth in sports and education,” it said in a statement.
Heriot-Watt University has a long history of championing inclusivity, dating back to 1869 when Mary Burton became the first woman on its board. Burton successfully campaigned for the Watt Institution and School of Arts to admit women-23 years before other Scottish universities.
Her advocacy for women's suffrage and educational equality continues to inspire Heriot-Watt’s mission to promote inclusivity and empower future generations, the statement added.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia said as Scotland prepares to make its second consecutive appearance at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025, the collaboration is a testament to both organisations’ shared values of excellence and empowerment.
Meanwhile, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia provost and chief executive officer Prof Mushtak Al-Atabi said as an institution committed to nurturing purpose-driven leaders, the university’s Malaysia is proud to support initiatives that empower women and foster inclusivity in sports and education.
“By partnering with Scotland’s Under-19 Women’s National Cricket Team, we are not only celebrating their achievements but also inspiring the next generation to break barriers, drive positive change, and make a lasting impact on communities in Scotland, Dubai, Malaysia, and beyond.
“In addition, this partnership highlights our shared commitment to championing excellence. In line with this, we are honoured to host the Scotland Women’s cricket team, offering our students the chance to engage with these remarkable athletes and support them on their journey to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup,” he added.
Scotland’s U-19 Women’s squad tour manager Fiona Rae said it was a fantastic opportunity for the team to interact with the students and community here at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.
“The enthusiasm and support shown by the university have been overwhelming, and we are proud to have them as our partner as we head into this World Cup,” she said.
The university staff and students, including members of the Watt Club and St. Andrews Society, attended the cricket matches last Saturday (Jan 18), where Scotland played both Australia and Bangladesh in Group D, at the UKM-YSD Cricket Oval in Selangor.
As an university with roots in Scotland, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s sponsorship reflects its broader mission to promote holistic student development through sports, leadership, and global engagement.
This approach ensures that students excel academically while thriving as global purpose-driven leaders. Heriot-Watt University Malaysia looks forward to continued collaboration with Cricket Scotland, offering ongoing support to the team as they compete on the world stage.
