UPM OUTLINES FIVE STRATEGIES TO DRIVE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

24/01/2025 05:18 PM

SERDANG, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has outlined five key strategies to enhance its position and ensure sustainable development this year.

UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said that the strategies covered various aspects, including enhancing student learning experiences, developing talent, ensuring financial sustainability, and solidifying UPM’s global standing.

“These five strategies seek to deepen the university’s core and deliver more meaningful results.

“Talent development is among the primary focus areas because human resources, including university staff and students, are the key element,” he told reporters after delivering his New Year Message to UPM staff here today.

He highlighted that UPM would continue to move forward by paying attention to special projects such as food security and planetary health.

“The planetary health project will also be a key focus, as UPM is recognised as a green campus with strengths in both forestry and agriculture,” he said.

Elaborating, Ahmad Farhan said the efforts to safeguard planetary health involved preparing a blueprint to serve as a guide for curriculum developers and researchers, which was expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.

“Similar to the food security blueprint, which is currently being referred to by other universities, we hope the planetary health blueprint will also have a significant impact,” he said.

In its pursuit of academic excellence, Ahmad Farhan said that UPM did not set specific ranking targets, but instead focused on continuous improvement.

“My message to heads of departments is that whatever you do, the results must be better than last year’s. That will ensure continuous improvement,” he said.

Ahmad Farhan said that every initiative implemented by UPM was aimed at benefiting the community, both directly and indirectly.

“Students will return to the community, and various initiatives, such as food security and strengthening the farming community, are designed to address community issues,” he said.

During the ceremony, Ahmad Farhan also led UPM staff in reciting a corruption-free pledge to demonstrate the university’s commitment to ensuring integrity and transparency in all its administrative and operational matters.

The recitation of the pledge was witnessed by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission community education division director Nazli Rasyid Sulong.
