IIUM DONATES A WEEK'S RATION OF FOOD PACKS TO 300 NEEDY PEOPLE IN CHOW KIT

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25 (Bernama) -- The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) started its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) rolling with a lifeline of food packs to more than 300 asnaf (tithe recipients) and the underprivileged in the Chow Kit vicinity here today, with even lecturers donning aprons to cook.

The CSR programme, made possible through the Centre for Languages and Pre-University Academic Development (CELPAD) and the Alumni Relations Division, was held in collaboration with Warung Makan Sahabat, a community centre that provides free food to the homeless in the city.

The programme’s advisor, Abdullah Bukhari Abdul Rahim, said RM10,400 was donated to Warung Makan Sahabat from public donations that had been collected for more than a month at the university.

“Part of the donations were spent on the distribution of food packs today with 15 people consisting of university staff and language lecturers pooling together to cook the rations.

“The remaining funds will be managed by Warung Makan Sahabat for the distribution of food packs for a week,” he told Bernama.

Abdullah Bukhari, who is also the deputy director of Student Development and Community Engagement at CELPAD, said the CSR programme provides an opportunity for his party to share sustenance with the less fortunate, apart from the university's efforts being involved in welfare and humanitarian activities, especially in communities outside the campus.

"This programme provides an opportunity for IIUM staff to get out of their comfort zone and experience the challenging situation of those less fortunate,” he said.

Meanwhile, Warung Makan Sahabat  manager Mohd Khairul Azman Md Daud said they have been allocated about RM6,000 to provide food packs for a week and he hopes more parties including non-governmental organisations (NGOs), corporate entities and the private sector will take the opportunity to help the less fortunate.
