SPECIAL KAVADI WORKSHOP FOR INDIAN YOUTHS THIS FRIDAY

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- A special workshop on Kavadi carrying and dancing, called 'Kanthan Kavadi’, will be organised in collaboration with the Sri Rathakrishnan Fine Arts Dance Academy and Hindu Dharma Mamandram to educate Indian youths on the right cultural practices.

Deputy National Unity Minister K. Saraswathy said the workshop, which is entirely free of charge, will focus on the sanctity, discipline and spiritual significance of the sacred Kavadi tradition embraced by Indians in the country during Thaipusam.

“We also did a study and found out that Indian youths are attracted to tradition but are also being influenced by what is shown in cinemas.

“For a start, what we intend to do is to provide them with a greater understanding of Kavadi, why is it being carried and the discipline they must follow. Once we start this workshop, we welcome all Hindu temples and dance schools to share about the practices too,” she told a press conference at the Parliament building here today.

The workshop is scheduled for Friday (Feb 7) from 8 am to 7 pm at the Sri Subramaniar Devasthanam Temple in Pandamaran, Klang, and will consist of three sessions namely Kavadi making, dance training and Kavadi presentation.

The deputy minister said Indian youths interested in learning and embracing cultural practices the right way can confirm their attendance by filling out a Google Form available on her social media platforms.

Kavadi is an arch-like structure carried by Hindu devotees on their shoulders for Thaipusam as an act of devotion and gratitude to the deity Lord Murugan to fulfil their vows or prayers.
