GEORGE TOWN, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- The Penang Malay Association (PEMENANG) has called on all members of Parliament to heed the decree of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, urging them to adopt a mature political culture and maintain decorum during debates in Parliament.
Its president Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff said that all MPs, whether from the government or the opposition, must exhibit good conduct and set a good example for future generations.
“The King’s decree is a directive to all MPs, whether from the opposition or government, to adopt a mature political culture, as they represent the people in their respective constituencies.
“If leaders or elected representatives set a bad example, future generations will view the Dewan Rakyat as a place for arguments and disrespect the House,” he said in a statement today.
During the Opening Ceremony of the First Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament for both the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara on Monday, Sultan Ibrahim reminded all MPs and senators that Parliament was not a place for heated arguments, insults, or slander.
His Majesty stressed that Parliament was a distinguished institution meant for deliberating matters of public interest and national prosperity.
Meanwhile, Mohd Yussof said that PEMENANG fully supported Sultan Ibrahim’s decree, urging MPs not to politicise every issue for the sake of party interests.
He said that the Unity Government was formed based on the advice of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, after no party secured a majority in the 15th General Election.
“The component parties of Pakatan Harapan (PH) have joined forces with Barisan Nasional (BN) to form the government, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) has chosen to be the opposition and is responsible for checks and balances.
“Therefore, both parties must play their roles professionally and not escalate arguments to shouting in Parliament,” he said.
