INDONESIA, MALAYSIA PROGRAMMERS SHOULD DEVELOP NUSANTARA STYLE DEEPSEEK

12/02/2025 08:52 PM

SHAH ALAM, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- Young programmers in Indonesia and Malaysia should consider developing a Nusantara-style system similar to China’s open-source artificial intelligence (AI) platform, DeepSeek, said Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arif Havas Oegroseno.

Speaking to reporters after delivering a lecture at Management & Science University (MSU) here today, Arif Havas said technology experts from both countries should explore the possibility, as DeepSeek is open source.

“It is not stealing anyone’s technology, and there are no legal boundaries to develop a system like that.

“If China can do it, we should be able to take it through because it's open source. The big technology... on proprietary technology is protected by patents,” he said after delivering a lecture on Muafakat Indonesia-Malaysia for Economic Growth and Security Stability of ASEAN in the Digital Age Era.

Arif Havas, who is on a working visit to Malaysia starting Tuesday, had earlier introduced the idea during his lecture and was later asked by reporters to elaborate on the suggestion.

Senior Political Secretary to the Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, and Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Datuk Hermono, attended the lecture session.

On Jan 29, Anadolu Ajansi reported that China’s DeepSeek AI chatbot has rapidly gained global traction, rivalling ChatGPT despite operating with significantly fewer resources.

It has even dethroned the former model in several regions, including the United States, highlighting its cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

DeepSeek’s rise has sparked discussions in the technology industry, as it operates on a fraction of the resources used by its competitors.

The performance of DeepSeek against industry leaders such as Google and OpenAI has unsettled big technology stocks, particularly in the semiconductor sector.

Meanwhile, during his lecture, Arif Havas said Indonesia and Malaysia must collaborate in the digital world, as ASEAN’s digital economy is now valued at US$260 billion.

“So in 2030, we are looking at trillions in our digital economy. It consists of e-commerce, FinTech, media services, and food delivery.

“If you look at the global analysis, Southeast Asia is obviously the future of the economy…,” he added.
