SANDAKAN, Feb 15 (Bernama) -- The government is set to enhance legal aid access for the B40 community, especially in remote areas of Sabah and Sarawak, with plans to gradually increase the number of mobile legal service vans nationwide.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran said there were currently five mobile vans in operation under the Justice on Wheels (JoW) initiative, three of which were acquired under the leadership of the Madani Government.
“This initiative is part of our efforts to help the B40 communities who face challenges accessing legal services, especially in rural areas,” he said after officiating the JoW 2025 programme here, today.
Kulasegaran said the mobile legal aid programme had previously been held in areas such as Paitan, Tongod, Pitas, Papar and Sipitang, with most concerns raised being related to citizenship registration.
“While the programme cannot directly address citizenship issues, which fall under the National Registration Department's jurisdiction, legal professionals involved will provide essential guidance on navigating the legal process and resolving documentation issues,” he explained.
This initiative, initiated last year in Sabah and Sarawak, not only provides legal services but also spreads awareness about national legal matters to underserved communities.
