KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Muslim Women’s Welfare Board (LKPIM) is set to open another branch in Sandakan, Sabah in the near future.

Its president, Tunku Temenggong Kedah Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, said LKPIM currently has representatives in 70 districts and 103 branches nationwide.

“The total membership stands at 22,150,” she said in her speech at the LKPIM State Representatives Gathering at Dewan Tunku Puan Besar Kurshiah, Pantai Baharu here today.

Speaking at a press conference later, Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz said LKPIM had successfully established a home in Sungai Petani, Kedah, as a care centre for elderly women abandoned by their families.

“We have been saving for 20 years to build this centre,” she said.

LKPIM was founded by Malaysia’s first Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Kurshiah Tunku Besar Burhanuddin, on Oct 17, 1961, to improve women’s living standards.
