GEORGE TOWN, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) Retreat began with the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Senior Officials Working Group (ADSOM WG) Meeting at a hotel in Batu Ferringhi today.
The programme, which brings together defence ministers and senior officials from all 10 ASEAN member states and observer state Timor-Leste, will also continue with bilateral meetings in conjunction with the retreat.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin is also scheduled to hold a walkabout session today at the retreat which will run until Feb 27.
Previously, Mohamed Khaled said the ADMM Retreat remains an important platform to defend and discuss ASEAN's centrality in the evolving global and regional environment, besides emphasising the importance of strengthening cooperation among ASEAN member states and exploring new areas of defence cooperation.
The ADMM Retreat will continue on the second day tomorrow and will be chaired by Mohamed Khaled as the host.
More than 150 delegates from 10 ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste and the ASEAN Secretariat are expected to attend this retreat.
Penang will host 13 major meetings during the ASEAN-Malaysia 2025 Chairmanship, involving discussions at working, senior official and ministerial levels conducted by seven ministries.
The ADMM retreat is being held in conjunction with the ASEAN-Malaysia 2025 Chairmanship which is themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
Malaysia will be hosting more than 300 ASEAN-related meetings, programmes and summits throughout the year and had previously chaired ASEAN in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.
