KOTA KINABALU, March 3 (Bernama) -- The Sabah government, in collaboration with relevant agencies, is committed to finding the best way to assist fire victims in Kampung Cempaka, Likas last Saturday.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that as a caring government, the welfare of these fire victims would be prioritised, particularly during this holy month of Ramadan.
“We have extended RM1,300 in aid to each head of household, comprising RM1,000 from the state government and RM300 from the Yayasan Sabah Group,” he told reporters after visiting and distributing aid to the victims at the Likas Multipurpose Hall today.
He said that besides financial assistance, the government has provided gas stoves and cooking gas through the Sabah Welfare Foundation and food basket from the Yayasan Sabah Group.
Other organisations, including the Community Development Leaders Unit, have also stepped in to provide food aid.
Immediate assistance was provided at the temporary relief centres (PPS) including food baskets from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force, as well as retort meal packs and food from the Sabah Welfare Services Department.
The fire, which broke out early Saturday, left 511 people from 91 families homeless after their residences were destroyed.
Two relief centres have been set up to shelter the victims, namely PPS Likas, which accommodates 200 residents and PPS Damai, Luyang, which houses 311 evacuees.
