PASAR SITI KHADIJAH GETS A MODERN MAKEOVER WHILE PRESERVING HERITAGE

KOTA BHARU, March 16 (Bernama) -- The scent of freshly ground spices fills the air as traders call out their best deals, blending tradition with modern comfort at the newly refurbished Pasar Siti Khadijah.

A symbol of Kelantan’s vibrant marketplace culture, the market now offers wider spaces, better lighting, and improved ventilation - enhancing both business and visitor experience while preserving its rich heritage.

A Bernama check today found the market’s façade repainted with intricate murals of traditional musical instruments.

New facilities, including designated pathways for persons with disabilities (PwDs), strategically placed rest areas, and an upgraded drainage system, further enhance the shopping experience.

For traders like Rohani Mat, 54, who has sold traditional Kelantanese food here for over 20 years, the transformation is a game-changer.

"With this new look, the market is more than just a place for trade - it’s an economic hub and a cultural attraction that will draw even more visitors," she said.

She recalled how the market was once congested and stuffy, making it difficult for both traders and shoppers. "Now, everything feels more spacious, organised, and inviting. Customers are more at ease, which helps business."

Dry goods and spice trader Mohd Nazri Hassan, 42, has already noticed an impact. "Since the reopening, more visitors are staying longer, and that’s great for business. The market is cleaner, better structured, and far more comfortable."

For customers, the improvements make a significant difference.

Mohd Farid Rahman, 45, from Kuala Lumpur, said he has always loved visiting Pasar Siti Khadijah but previously found it too hot and cramped. "Now, it’s airy and well-lit. I can browse at a relaxed pace, and the variety of local products is amazing. I’ll definitely be back."

Beyond being a trading hub, Pasar Siti Khadijah is evolving into a platform for promoting local products, hosting cultural events, and supporting entrepreneurship, reinforcing Kelantan’s status as a centre for traditional commerce while embracing modern conveniences.

With over four decades of history, this market remains a symbol of Kelantanese identity. Its transformation preserves its heritage while adapting to modern needs, ensuring its legacy continues.

Last October, the federal government approved RM5.5 million to upgrade the market’s infrastructure.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the MADANI government is committed to revitalising Pasar Siti Khadijah under the 12th Malaysia Plan, recognising its significance to the 1,500 traders who depend on it.
