KUCHING, March 15 (Bernama) -- In a cheerful atmosphere and sense of togetherness, the 'Juh Berambeh Sungkei' event held at Padang Merdeka attracted many participants from various ethnic and religious backgrounds.
According to Melvin Mclair, 23, a Bidayuh, this was his second time participating in the communal and relaxed breaking of fast event at the field.
He said the event was a great way to strengthen friendship and foster harmony and mutual respect among one another.
"I think this programme is excellent and should be organised every year. It highlights our shared harmony, where our group comprises both Muslims and non-Muslims, and we come together to break fast and share food," he told reporters here today.
For Naomi Ruran Saban, 20, from the Orang Ulu ethnic group, it was her first time joining the event, and she expressed excitement, suggesting that the event should be expanded to every part of the state.
"Hopefully, programmes like this can continue and be organised every year, as events like this help cultivate the spirit of unity and harmony among the people," she said.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the participation of various segments of society in the event demonstrates a collective commitment to strengthening inter-ethnic relations.
"The organisation of this event not only aims to celebrate the month of Ramadan but also serves as a platform to unite the people of Sarawak," he said.
