KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- The Yayasan Kebajikan Artis Tanahair (YKAT) is urging the authorities to consider allocating several People's Housing Project (PPR) units for veteran artistes who do not own homes.
YKAT chairman Datuk DJ Dave said not all veteran artistes enjoy financial stability despite having been prominent figures who significantly contributed to the growth of the nation's entertainment industry.
"However, some of them are now facing hardships... Some have to live with their children. Some can only afford to rent a single room. Some have lost their source of income due to health issues, making it impossible for them to own a home," he said.
He told reporters this following a breaking-fast event where RM1,000 cash donations were given to 13 veteran artistes respectively in conjunction with upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, here tonight.
DJ Dave said around 16 veteran artistes, including actors, singers, and musicians, are still awaiting approval for PPR housing.
He added that providing affordable housing for veteran artistes is not just about welfare but also a gesture of appreciation for their contributions to the country.
Since its establishment 13 years ago, YKAT has assisted nearly 1,900 veteran artistes through financial aid and social programmes to help ease their burden.
