MELAKA, March 20 (Bernama) -- The government will enforce the Trade Descriptions Order (Certification and Marking of Engine Oil for Motor Vehicles) 2024 starting April 7.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the enforcement of the law is being done to curb the sale of counterfeit motor vehicle engine oil in the market.
"This new order will enable consumers to identify the sale of genuine motor vehicle engine oil in the market, thus curbing the sale of counterfeit oil in the market which can pose safety risks and accidents on the road.
"This order will also be able to protect the interests of motor vehicle engine oil product manufacturing companies by curbing the risk of production of non-genuine products by irresponsible parties," he said.
He said this at a press conference on the Enforcement of the Trade Descriptions Order (Certification and Marking of Engine Oil for Motor Vehicles) 2024 at the Petronas Melaka Lube Blending Plant, Tangga Batu Industrial Estate here today.
Also present were Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) deputy secretary-general (domestic trade development) Datuk Roziah Abudin, KPDN director-general of enforcement Datuk Azman Adam, SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Omar Shariff Mydeen and Petronas Lubricants International Sdn Bhd managing director and group chief executive officer Khalil Muri.
Armizan said any engine oil product, whether produced locally or imported, must obtain a certificate of authenticity through SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, which was appointed as the party responsible for certifying and issuing product compliance labels for that purpose.
He said the government has given six months to manufacturing companies to comply with the directives regarding the gazette order starting on Oct 11, 2024.
"KPDN in collaboration with SIRIM has been organising engagement programmes since 2022 involving almost all major players in the motor vehicle engine oil industry in the country.
"Strict action will be taken against any importing company, distributor, seller who sells uncertified products and does not have a valid compliance label from the authorities," he said.
In a similar development, he said 240 complaints related to motor vehicle engine oil products were received by his department from January 2019 to February this year with 36 case actions taken with a seizure value of RM1,154,198.
