SIBU, March 21 (Bernama) -- Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has urged the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) to take immediate action in monitoring the current flood situation, particularly along the Pan Borneo Highway.
He said the disaster has affected the Durin Bridge route, about 35 kilometres from here, as continuous rainfall has caused the Batang Rajang’s water level to rise and overflow onto the road, creating difficulties for road users.
“As a precautionary measure, I have requested Sarawak JKR to continuously monitor the situation to ensure the safety of road users and take appropriate action if conditions worsen,” he said in a Facebook post.
He said the route is only passable to heavy vehicles and advised all road users to remain vigilant and follow the authorities’ instructions for their safety.
Continuous rainfall over the past few days has caused flooding in several areas in Sibu, including around Durin Bridge, which is a key route along the Pan Borneo Highway.
Sarawak JKR, in a WhatsApp message to the media, said safety signboards have been installed along the affected route.
In a related development, the department reported that the access road to the Baleh Hydroelectric Dam construction site in Kapit has been made impassable by a landslide.
