KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 (Bernama) -- The government, through the disaster management division, has deployed all available resources and the best assets to ensure the safety and welfare of residents in Johor, Sabah and Sarawak affected by floods, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister said efforts are being made, from rescue operations to the distribution of essential aid, to ensure the victims receive proper assistance.
“As we enter the last 10 days of Ramadan, our brothers and sisters in Johor, Sabah and Sarawak are being tested by unexpected floods. My heart aches when I hear the cries of those affected.
“Homes are submerged, belongings destroyed and young children forced to take shelter in evacuation centres. What we see is already heartbreaking, but for those experiencing it, the hardship is far greater,” he said in a post on X today.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said that as of noon, 12,255 people from 3,771 families remained affected, with 116 temporary relief centres (PPS) opened across the three states.
Johor recorded the highest number of victims, with 10,510 residents from 3,245 families taking shelter in 98 PPS across five districts.
“In Sabah, 1,273 residents from 405 families are still housed in 11 PPS across six districts, while in Sarawak, 472 residents from 121 families are placed in seven PPS across four districts,” he added.
