568 LOCATIONS IN JOHOR CHOSEN FOR PHASE 2 OF POP PROJECT - TEO

22/03/2025 03:05 PM

KULAI, March 22 (Bernama) -- A total of 568 locations have been chosen in Johor for the implementation of Phase 2 of the Point of Presence (PoP) Project, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.

Of the total, she said, 17 locations in school areas have been equipped with PoP fibre optic broadband facilities.

“Under phase two, 12 schools have been chosen (in the Kulai parliamentary constituency)... these schools will be referred to as the central point and we will fiberise these areas up to a radius of 2.5 kilometres (km).

“Among the schools chosen for the implementation of phase two of the PoP project are Sekolah Kebangsaan Sinar Bahagia, Felda Taib Andak, Sekolah Kebangsaan Felda Inas and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Ladang Kelan, Kulai,” she told a media conference at the launch of the Bandar Senai National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) here today.

Teo, who is also the Kulai Member of Parliament, hopes the expansion of the PoP will provide convenience to the local community, thus increasing internet speed services.

Meanwhile, she said that the 55 schools in the state that were chosen for the implementation of phase one of the PoP project have been completed.

“Under the Kulai parliamentary constituency, three schools were chosen under phase one of the PoP project, including Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kelapa Sawit and SMK Bukit Batu as well as the Sedenak Industrial area (all completed),” she said.

The PoP project aims to bridge the digital divide in rural areas by turning schools into fibre optic broadband infrastructure hubs, enabling schools, government premises and surrounding residential areas to access high-speed broadband.

In another development, Teo said two more NADI centres are expected to be opened in the state at the end of this month.

Teo said this would involve the state assembly areas of Parit Yaani in Kampung Bukit Sri Wangi, Batu Pahat and Larkin in the Kebun Teh, adding that the opening of these two NADI centres, she said, would complete the 101 NADI centres in Johor, which is in line with the initiative of each state assembly having one NADI.

“We encourage the surrounding residents to come and enjoy the facilities provided by NADI, with each NADI centre providing at least 20 laptops that can be used for online classes and so on.

“NADI also intends to train e-entrepreneurs. This is one of the initiatives under NADI, we want to help increase household income,” she said.
