BANGI, March 26 (Bernama) – An innovative graft replacement for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction, known as the Modified UKM Internal Brace (MUIB), offers a more effective solution to help patients return to sports after surgery.
KL Orthosports Sdn Bhd (KL Orthosports) chief executive officer, Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Badrul Akmal Hisham Md Yusoff said that the innovative technique, which has been in use since 2018, involves the use of a graft with an internal brace, differentiating it from other methods available in the market.
“In fact, ACL surgery treatment has been available in the country for some time. However, we have introduced innovation in graft preparation for ACL replacement. When an ACL is torn, it cannot be stitched back together—it must be reconstructed.
“Why MUIB? Many of our patients are athletes and highly active sports professionals. They seek a ligament that feels completely normal post-surgery, as ACL injury patients are often concerned about ligament looseness after the procedure,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after the Licensing Rights Ceremony at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) for the use of the MUIB orthopaedic innovation at the national university here today.
MUIB, an innovation by UKM start-up company KL Orthosports, has obtained UKM's licensing rights, allowing it to be commercialised and widely utilised.
Currently undergoing the patenting process at the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), the MUIB innovation is the result of over seven years of clinical research since 2018 by the KL Orthosports team.
Meanwhile, UKM Board of Directors chairman, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamad Abd Razak stated in his speech that the licensing and commercialisation of the MUIB ACL/PCL to KL Orthosports marks a significant step forward in UKM’s and the nation’s mission to translate research into tangible benefits for society.
“Today, UKM stands on the brink of a new era in orthopaedic care. The MUIB ACL/PCL represents a beacon of hope for many patients suffering from ligament injuries, offering them a faster and more effective recovery. It symbolises our unwavering commitment to enhancing human health and well-being through innovation and collaboration,” he said.
During the same event, a memorandum of understanding was also exchanged between KL Orthosports and a local orthopaedic medical device company, Evo Med Sdn Bhd, to provide specialised training for orthopaedic specialists in ACL and PCL reconstruction surgery, as well as the preparation of MUIB graft innovations.
Additionally, the ceremony also witnessed the presentation of a financial grant amounting to RM171,200 by SME Corp through the Inclusive Ecosystem Programme (i-SEE) to KL Orthosports, aimed at encouraging innovators and companies to implement innovation projects that provide products or services.
