UGGAH URGES CONTRACTOR TO SPEED UP BATANG PALOH BRIDGE PROJECT

26/03/2025 05:54 PM

KUCHING, March 26 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has expressed concern over the delay of the RM298.4 million Batang Paloh Bridge project in Mukah.

He urged the contractor to make more serious efforts to speed up construction, including bringing in more machinery and equipment and extending working hours, to ensure that the project, which is already delayed by 96 days, is completed by March next year.

"This is one of our problematic bridge projects. It is close to becoming what we would categorise as a sick project.

“(Delays in) Such major projects will result in the public expressing their anger and frustration towards elected representatives and the government,” he said in a statement after receiving a progress briefing from Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) director Dr Cassidy Morris and the contractor's representative today.

Uggah said that the Sarawak JKR would create a new work plan to speed up construction work and that he plans to visit the site in July to check on its progress.

The overall progress of the two-lane 1.7-kilometre-long bridge and 4.6 kilometres of roadworks has only reached 75.25 per cent, so far, compared to the scheduled 84.63 per cent.
