KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 (Bernama) – Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has expressed sympathy and solidarity with the people of Myanmar and Thailand affected by a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Sagaing region in Myanmar earlier today.

In a statement, he extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

“In these challenging times, we in Malaysia stand with the people of Myanmar and Thailand, as well as all those affected. I pray that they find strength and resilience in facing this disaster,” he said.

According to media reports, the earthquake hit Myanmar at 12.50 pm (local time), with strong tremors also felt in Thailand, including its capital Bangkok.

So far, one fatality has been reported, while 50 others were injured in Bangkok after a high-rise building collapsed due to the tremors.

Johari hoped relief and rescue efforts would proceed swiftly and effectively to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.

He also stressed the importance of ASEAN solidarity in responding to such disasters, ensuring that no member country is left to face challenges alone.

“In moments like these, it is our duty to stand together and demonstrate our solidarity,” he said.
