JOHOR BAHRU, April 1 (Bernama) -- The Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre (TMIYC) in Pasir Gudang is set to officially open to the public by the end of April, while the Iskandar Puteri branch is expected to follow in June or July this year.
State Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, and Cooperatives Committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said this brings the total number of operational TMIYCs to five, following the openings in Johor Bahru, Muar, and Renggam, Kluang.
“We are awaiting a date to be set by His Royal Highness the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, for his consent to officiate the TMIYC,” he said.
“The construction components of both TMIYCs are largely similar, focusing on providing facilities for youth activities and recreational spaces,” he told Bernama recently.
He added that the state government also plans to build a TMIYC in the Tangkak district, with a groundbreaking ceremony expected to take place this year.
He said that the state government remains committed to ensuring that TMIYCs are established in every district, as part of efforts to further empower the youth.
“Every district will have a TMIYC. The local authorities (PBTs) of Pontian and Kulai have also met with me to discuss this initiative.
“The construction will depend on the PBTs' capacity and available funding, with additional allocations to be sought from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), and other relevant agencies,” he said.
TMIYC, the brainchild of Tunku Mahkota Ismail, serves as a platform for youths to engage in recreational and leisure activities, in a relaxed setting. The first TMIYC was established in Johor Bahru on Dec 21, 2020.
Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi reportedly said that Tunku Mahkota Ismail envisions TMIYCs being developed across all 10 districts in the state within five years, starting in 2022.
