PERIOD TO ASSIST PIPELINE FIRE VICTIMS HINGES ON STATE DIASTER COMMITTEE – CHIEF SEC

KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 (Bernama) -- The coordination period for government departments and agencies tasked with helping the victims of the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights will only be determined after the Selangor state disaster management committee, chaired by Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, makes an official decision.

Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said any decision, including the duration of assignments, depends on the current safety assessment, and that coordination between departments involved was good and satisfactory, especially in dealing with victims and support logistics.

“We will wait till they have made a determination as many residents have houses that can be said are safe to return to.

“So, we have to wait till the situation is safer as we prioritise the safety of residents,” he told reporters after visiting the relief centre at Putra Heights Mosque near here today.

Shamsul Azri also praised the cooperation of the various government agencies that coordinated aid operations and victim management, especially the Social Welfare Department, the Health Ministry and other support agencies.

“This shows a very high level of esprit de corps among government agencies, like I always stress, through a ‘whole of government’ approach and teamwork.

“It’s proven here, Alhamdulillah all preparations for now look good and when I paid a visit, most are satisfied with the facilities and services offered by government agencies here,” he said after spending about an hour at the relief centre.
